Civic Groups and DC Politics

“Crestwood” originally referred to the southwest section of Crestwood that was the development known as Crestwood on the Park. “Crestwood” now refers to the area covered by the Crestwood Advisory Neighborhood Commission, which is ANC single member district 4A08. For purposes of inclusion, this website will include information relevant to the residents that also fall under ANC 4A03.

Crestwood has a number of block-level or section level neighborhood groups, including the Blagden Terrace Neighbors and the Crestwood Citizens Association.

The Crestwood Citizens Association

There are several civic organizations, of longstanding duration in Crestwood. Ours is the Crestwood Citizens Association, which covers the southwest section of Crestwood, west of 17th Street, from Crestwood Drive to Blagden Avenue, up to the 4300 block and all of Upshur. Residents of the Crestwood Citizens Association have been working together through a network of community block contacts. Information is provided to residents of the area by email to those who use it (separate from the Crestwood Neighborhood Email List, the “listserve”, accessible on this web site, which provides two-way communication for all of Crestwood) and by postal mail to those who do not. The Crestwood Citizens Association maintains a Crestwood directory for its area that is updated every two to three years and organizes a number of functions at the block level. Residents of the Crestwood Citizens Association have been active in issues such as opposing any further closures of Beach Drive, pushed for the Council vote on Klingle Road, pushed for the cap on real estate taxes and, in conjunction with the Neighborhood League, is working in partnerhip with the city to reduce crime. Some of the Association members have formed a Crestwood Community Beautification project which is working with Park Service to raise awareness on issues like invasive vines, the water quality, support for Rock Creek Park, getting the walkway (finally) down Blagden Avenue to Beach Drive, and helping to offer community input and support.

The Neigbhorhood League

The organization covering the largest geographic area is the Crestwood Neighborhood League which includes all single family households in the Crestwood/Carter Barron area up to, and including Colorado Avenue, from the west side of 16th over to Rock Creek Park.

The Crestwood Neighborhood League covers residents who live in both sections covered by the Crestwood ANC 4A08. There is a small section of Crestwood that extends up to Colorado Avenue (Carter Barron) and is west of 16th Street). Those residents are not under the ANC 4A08. They are covered by ANC4A03. In addition, the League works with other nearby neighborhoods on many issues that we have in common.

DC Politics

The Mayor is Adrian Fenty, a Crestwood resident. To reach the Mayor’s Call Center to report problems and requests, call 727-1000.

The City Council is the legislative Branch, and is headed by Chair Vincent C. Gray. The DC City Council controls the budget and oversight.

The city is divided into 8 city wards for voting purposes. Each ward has approximately 77,000 people. Each ward is represented by a Council Member; and there are four at-large council members. Crestwood/ Carter Barron is in Ward 4. Our Ward is represented by Councilmember Adrian M. Fenty. A special election is scheduled for the Spring to elect a replacement for Fenty when he becomes Mayor. The other Council At-Large Members are Council Members Schwartz, Mendelson, Catania and Brown.

Each of the wards have between four to six Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. The neighborhood Advisory Neighborhood Commissions are the city’s official designated voice oc the people, according to the DC code. Crestwood is represented by a single member district and that is ANC4A08. James H. Jones is the “Crestwood” ANC commissioner and he also serves as the chair of the full ANC. ANC 4A meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Fort Stevens Recreation Center. The Crestwood ANC covers nearly all of the residents in Crestwood. The remaining residents along Colorado Avenue, west of 16th Street and the 4700 to 4800 blocks or on Buchanan Street and Crittenden Street, near Carter Barron, are not under the “Crestwood” ANC, which is a single district. Our neighbors in the corner near the Carter Barron are covered by ANC 4C03. All residents on the west side of 16th Street, up to and including Colorado Avenue are part of the Crestwood/Carter Barron community. This census track is aligned with the US Census track 26.
