October, 2004 Minutes

by Jeff Steele last modified 2006-12-06 12:15

Crestwood Citizens Association (CCA) president Gale Black opened the meeting and presided at Grace Lutheran Church at 16th and Varnum Streets. A representative of Grace Lutheran Church welcomed the residents and said that the church welcomes everyone to services at 10:30 Sunday mornings and said that the church is interested in engaging with the neighborhood in many ways.

A representative from Councilman Fenty’s office attended the meeting and reported that there has been no response yet from VDOT on restricted parking in the 1700 block of Shepherd Street. He also mentioned new the Ward 4 ban on the sales of single containers of alcoholic beverages.

Crime Discussion

Three officers from the Police Department discussed crime and safety concerns with attendees. Sergeant Black said that the number one problem in the area is stolen automobiles, particularly all Chrysler products. The best deterrents are visible alarms with flashing lights and clubs. Keep a lookout for suspicious activities such as unknown cars idling.

Citizens described personal experiences with crime in the neighborhood. Robberies were discussed, particularly thefts from homes. Idling cars with prostitutes were also of concern.

Precautions one could take to protect one’s home are: alarm systems with visible stickers in the windows that there is an alarm; keep bushes cut around the house and near windows in particular; and motion activated spot lights. It was stressed by several residents that people should inspect their doors and doorframes. Many of the homes in Crestwood originally had about a half-inch of wood trim around the doors. This trim/door frame is very easily broken and the thief can then enter through the broken down door. Steel reinforced doorframes were highly recommended.

Ms. Black reminded everyone that a vigilant neighbor/buddy system of being aware and paying attention to what is happening on each of our streets is very important. A number of recent crimes were foiled when neighbors noticed something amiss and reported it to the police. Communication with each other and the police can go a long way in improving our safety.

Special areas of concern included the 1600 and 1700 blocks throughout the Crestwood Citizens Association’s area.

Remember to call 911 for any emergency. If you have a non-emergency you may call 311.

Crime statistics relevant to the Crestwood area (Patrol Service Area 404) are posted on this website
