Bioblitz in Rock Creek Park
Nation Park Service species inventory.
The Rock Creek Park BioBlitz, presented and sponsored by National Geographic and the National Park Service, Rock Creek Park, is a 24-hour inventory of the species in Rock Creek Park. Teams of scientists and naturalists, along with volunteers will comb the park's 1,755 aces, observing and recording as many species as possible.
The goals of the event are to:
-- record as many living organisms as possible within a 24-hour time period
--increase public awareness of the diverse species in our urban setting; and
--promote the collaboration of scientists and citizens celebrating and safeguarding the natural systems in their community, both local and global.
So, bring your family, friends and neighbors to Rock Creek Park on May
18-19 and help the experts count species of bugs, birds, bats, and other organisms that reside in the park.
We expect a high turnout for the BioBlitz--extensive media coverage (including in National Geographic magazines, TV, radio, web. lectures); educational outreach, curricular materials, and involvement of local K-12 classes; appearances by celebrities and government leaders; and demonstrations of new field technology.
