The Crestwood-Casey Trees workshop will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at Grace Lutheran Church. This workshop is for homeowners in the three pilot blocks of the Crestwood Green Team's Tree Project: the 1700 block of Varnum Street, Crestwood Drive, and the "interior" block defined by 18th Street, Quincy Street, Argyle Terrace (east side) and Randolph Street (south side). If homeowners in these areas have not yet signed up for the workshop, please do so by calling Carol Herwig at 202-349-1907.

The purpose of the workshop is to help homeowners decide which trees they would like planted on their property on the Crestwood tree planting day on November 21. Casey Trees will provide at least one free tree per property and plant it with the help of Crestwood volunteers, Casey Trees staff and their volunteers.

Please contact Green Team chair, Doug Barker or Frank Samuel for more information. Pilot block captains are: Beverly and John Ostenso (Varnum Street), Gale Black and Bill Bentley (Crestwood Drive) and Peggy Beers, Doug Barker and Frank Samuel (18th-Quincy-Argyle-Randolph). The Tree Project Task Force hopes to extend the Tree Project to other Crestwood blocks next year.

On Saturday morning, September 12, eighteen Crestwood volunteers and a dozen Casey Trees staff and Citizen Foresters conducted an inventory of canopy and understory trees on three pilot blocks: Crestwood Drive, the 1700 block of Varnum Street, and 18th-Quincy-Argyle-Randolph. Three teams worked in each block to identify, measure (girth, not height!) and assess condition. An additional team identified possible planting sites for homeowners to consider. Bill Bentley got the teams off to a good start with coffee and doughnuts, and Casey Trees provided pizza for lunch at the end of the morning.

Homeowners in the pilot blocks are encouraged to sign up to attend a homeowners planting workshop to be held at Grace Lutheran Church at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. At this event, homeowners will be given practical advice on which trees to plant (Casey Trees will provide one free tree and reimburse part of the cost of a second), as well as proper location and maintenance.

Pilot block homeowners should sign up for the October 14th Homeowners Design Workshop by October 7--the sooner, the better, because only 35 people can be accommodated. Register by calling Carolyn Herwig at Casey Trees: 202-349-1907. Carolyn will create a master file so that we can send all participants a reminder email a few days before the event./p>

Tree planting will take place on Saturday, November 21. Casey Trees will provide the trees, tools, experienced staff and some volunteers. Crestwood volunteers will also be needed, so mark your calendars.

Many, many thanks to all the volunteers who made the September 12 inventory possible. And thanks to all the pilot block homeowners too. It was a great start!

Any questions? Contact Crestwood Green Team leader Doug Barker or any other Tree Project working group member: Peggy Beers, Bill and Gale Bentley, Gale Black, Steve Klein, Betsy Kraft, Bev and John Ostenso and Frank Samuel.

Don't forget: October 14 for the homeowners tree planting workshop and November 21 for planting of new trees.

NPS is planning to control the Rock Creek Park deer population.

The National Park Service has published its White-tailed Deer Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement. There is a link on the page to comment on the document. The deer population, as we all see, has increased dramatically. The description of the favored option of controlling them is "sharpshooting and capture/euthanasia would be used initially to quickly reduce the deer herd numbers, followed by population maintenance via reproductive control methods if these are available and feasible; if not, sharpshooting would be used as a default option for maintenance"

Here is the current status of the proposed pathway along Blagden Avenue from the DC government:

The approved Environmental Assessment for the Blagden Avenue trail can be reviewed at http://ddot.dc.gov/ddot/framesasp?doc=/ddot/lib/ddot/information/studies/blagden/blagdenavedraft_ea.pdf

We have stop sign and high visibility crosswalk to the island. We also have high visibility crosswalk from the island to cross Beach Drive. With coordination with NPS, we propose to add pedestrian signs for additional safety.

Blagden Avenue Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) evaluates the potential impacts from the construction of a hiker/biker trail along Blagden Avenue between Matthewson Drive and Beach Drive within Rock Creek Park, north central Washington, DC.

The proposed trail would allow safe pedestrian and bicycle access to Rock Creek Park and associated facilities, including the Valley Trail and the bike and foot trails that run throughout Rock Creek Park. Rock Creek Park is an administrative unit of the National Park Service (NPS).

Three alternatives are evaluated in this EA: the No Build Alternative, and two Build Alternatives: the North of Blagden Alternative, and the South of Blagden Alternative.

Impacts for the Build Alternatives are minimal. Although no trees will be directly impacted during construction of the North of Blagden Alternative, there is potential for some indirect impacts to trees due to the earthwork associated with trail construction. There are no potential direct or indirect impacts of the South of Blagden Alternative.
